Shaun and Angie Engagement Portraits

Just a short drive east of the valley is the beautiful Salt River recreation area, and a great natural environment for an engagement session!

There are several places to park, explore, and snap some shots.

Shaun and Angie were willing to hike down near the river to get some amazing portraits with Four Peaks in the background.

Springtime in the valley gave us some beautiful yellow flowers, and the natural Arizona desert rocks and mountains provided the rest.

We even ran across a huge heart shaped rock!

In one little cove, we were able to use the golden sunset reflection of the rock on the river to create a unique backdrop.

We ended with a gorgeous silhouette in the sun set.

All in all, it was a fun and adventurous session!

I only wish we had a little more time to take advantage of more of the amazing scenery!

What started out a perfect weather day changed as storm clouds slowly moved in, but not before Alejandra and Justin gave their vows in front of 50 happy family and friends.

Under one of Phoenix’s giant, old mesquite trees, dating back 125 years, the ceremony took place, officiated by Justin’s good friend, pastor Zack Schiffer.

He tied a very tight knot of wedding vows around both of them with beautiful words of encouragement, scripture, and Christian perspective.

The wedding location took place on a small island of green trees and landscape near downtown Phoenix, Arizona, at Valley Garden Center.

As soon as the ceremony was over, Justin’s aunt and uncle, Candace and Jason, both professional wedding photographers, ushered everyone out from underneath the tree and proceeded to shoot family portraits.

Many of the guests took their chairs to reception tables under other trees nearby while the photographs were being taken.

No sooner had the salads placed in front of the guests and the bride and groom made their entry and began to drizzle.

Everyone rushed indoors with tables and chairs in tow to sit down in front of a prime rib dinner prepared by the bride’s father, Luis.

The seating was a bit tight but very cozy and fun.

Wonderful toasts we’re given by the parents of the bride and groom as well as the best man, maid of honor, and a number of other family members.

Later in the evening, dancing and cutting the cake took place in a large room next to the dining room.

Justin’s mother, father-in-law, sisters, and brother had traveled up from Houston, Texas, to enjoy the wedding.

Alejandro’s father, Luis, who owns Biscuits Restaurant in Tempe, provided the fabulous dinner that night.

Justin’s aunt Ellen Jent made all the flowers. His grandmother, Monica, made the five wedding cakes that were eagerly consumed by the guests.

Towards the evening’s end, the weather cleared. The two wedding photographers took the bride and groom out for memorable evening photographs with specially prepared flash equipment.

One of the night’s highlights happened outdoors just before dinner, when Justin’s cousin Zeke blew the Jewish horn, Shofar, to introduce the bride and groom.

The DJ had set up unique lights that looked like two giant sparklers as Alejandra and Justin walked into all the guests just before the rain started.

Justin’s dad, Shaun, had provided firewood and picked up two colossal ice containers for the wedding, and rushed around all day and evening to get everything in place. He was a busy man that day.

Something magical happens every year in the AZ desert.  In about the time span of a week or two, if we are lucky, wildflowers and flowering bushes suddenly erupt in color.

It’s pretty amazing to see, and even more amazing when it lines up with a photo session!  Hands down, one of the best places in the South-East valley to see this is at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve.

This was the setting of our evening for Shelby’s senior session.  The park was bursting with an array of yellow bushes, trees, and ground flowers.

It was a perfect match for Shelby’s bright personality! Shelby is another senior I’ve had the privilege of “blossom” into a beautiful young lady.

As we walked around the lake, we took advantage of the lake and the foliage.

At one point, we even found a place that looked like a pre-made senior photo backdrop with yellow flowers climbing up a rustic horse fence!

We made sure to include the iconic AZ mountains in the background as well as some saguaros.

An all-around great evening with Shelby and her mom!

Senior portrait sessions are always such a great experience.  It allows me to be creative and take time to set up and capture images that really express the senior’s personality.

They are even better when it’s someone I’ve had the privilege of watching grow up for years – what an honor to be able to document such a special time!

Megan and her mom were wonderful to work with.  We planned the session, with clothing, props, and any general expectations, then just went with it.

We started about an hour before sunset, at one of my favorite south Tempe locations.  As we walked the park, we took advantage of the water fall, trees, and beautiful lake background.

I also brought my awesome light-weight upholstered chair to bring a contrasting element to the natural background.

Megan is a beautiful, sweet, and talented young lady.  We had so much fun capturing some great shots that really showcase her passions and personality.

We were actually having such a good time, that I was sad when the sun set and brought a close to our session!
